How do IREC panels make decisions?
Panel members and chairs read your application thoroughly, think carefully about the content, and discuss it together in an online meeting with the aim of reaching consensus. It is possible that we may find ourselves unable to reach a consensus, in which case we would explain this fully in our response, including the range of views put forward.
What do panel chairs do?
Chair the online meetings, contribute their own views, and draft responses which are then checked by all panel members before being sent to clients.
Why are your charges so high?
Because we pay panel members and chairs fairly for their time, effort, and expertise. This enables us to offer a response to your application which is fully considered from a range of perspectives by a diverse panel. We operate a sliding scale of costs to try to make the service accessible to as many people as possible.
I’m not sure which point on the sliding scale applies to me; can you help?
Yes. Email us at irec@justreasonable.org.uk and explain your situation, and we will advise.
Can I have a chat with someone about this process before I submit an application?
Yes, you can book time with individual panel members on request, subject to availability. Details of panel members are here and costs for individual sessions are here.
Do you offer ethics monitoring for projects, as well as ethics review?
Yes we do. You will find more information here.
Do you have an AI Policy?
